Topic 1.
Examples of electric power generation in the world and Kazakhstan

The original source of most types of energy is the sun’s radiation.

A renewable energy source is clearly one that can be renewed like wood, solar power, geothermal, wind, hydroelectric and tidal waves.

A non renewable energy source is one that when it has been used it is gone forever. The main examples are coal, oil and gas.

In most power stations an energy source is used to heat water. The steam produced drives the turbine which drives the electrical generator.

A fuel is something that can be burned to release heat energy which is used to drive the turbines. Coal, oil and gas are called “fossil fuels”. Not all our energy resources are fuels which need to be burnt to produce heat in this way. Nuclear and geothermal use fission and heat energy from the earth to heat the water.

Topic 2.
Electric Current

What is electric current?

When electrons move, we say electric current is produced. An electric current is is formed by moving electrons.

An electric current, I is the rate of flow of charge Q.

In symbols,

The SI unit of current is the ampere (A).

An ammeter is used to measure the strength of electric current in an electric circuit.

  • The ammeter should be connected in series to the rest of the circuit.
  • The current should flow into the ammeter through the positive “+” or red terminal and leave through the negative “-” or black terminal.
